Show what?
Connor Johnston Showreel 2012 from Connor Johnston on Vimeo.
This is what has been taking up most of my time recently. My 2012 Graduation Showreel. In the end, I was quite happy with this. I'm pretty proud of what I've created over these past 3 years. I'm glad that I've got a record of it now.
Enjoy :)

FINISHED!!!!!!1
Well, I can officially say that the film is complete. No more animating, no more rendering, no more anything. Considering the hardships we went through to get this thing done, I'm really proud of our effort and accomplishment.
Looking forward no to my next project. Who knows what that will be...

Barbouillageville Trailer from Declan Byrne on Vimeo.
After months of hardships, lost crew members, and possible scurvy (maybe not), our grad film is finished!! It's not publicly available at the moment as we will be releasing it at film festivals first but I'll post more on that later. Feel free to sate your appetite by feeding your eyes with this delicious trailer.

Updates
Hellooo...
Here's a film update. It's a finished background for the film, complete with light rays. This background also involves dragons (not included) and a pirate ship (sold separately). Can't wait to get some more stuff up and ready.
Also, I've been doing some work with flash again and just whipped up these mouth shapes for fun. Not for anything particular but I'm sure I'll end up using them for something. Feel free to use as reference :)
Finally, here's a picture of what my hand looks like after Animating and Backgrounding all day...

Film Update
HEY LOOK. In the computer screen. It's a JPEG? It's a building? NO!! It's a...
~FILM UPDATE~
That's right folks. It's that time again. The time I share with the internets a piece of my film. It's not much, hence the huge title, but it's something.
This background is for the previously posted wave shot. The wave will rise over these buildings ...once it's animated.
In other news,
The film has just hit the 50% completion mark. So in celebration, here's a special picture...
...woohoo
In all seriousness though, it IS a pretty big achievement. We're actually quite surprised we've made it here. The film seems so massive and we're that one step closer to finishing it.
HERE is the legit film blog
Wish us luck :)

Internetsies
INTERNETS ACCESS
Hooray!!!!
After almost a week without it, I'm back. Here's what you missed:
- I moved house/out of my parents house
- drew some backgrounds
- animated a bit
- had lunch
- slept
- repeat
*sigh*
Anyway, sorta news. I'm getting an Axolotl soon from some friends that accidentally bred them. It's brown coloured and about as big as my index finger, 12cm-ish. I'm not sure if it's a he or a she (or a he/she or a she/he or identifies as a cat) yet, but I imagine that it will be beautiful no matter what.
God I love animals...

Feelms
The Alphabet from n9ve on Vimeo.
I don't know if this is typography or effects or what? It's definitely cool though. I love the transitions and timing. I was hooked in the first few seconds.
Gulp. The world's largest stop-motion animation shot on a Nokia N8. from Nokia HD on Vimeo.
A few years ago, I did a short stop motion animation using sand. It was the worst thing ever. Therefore, I have so much respect for this short. It's awesome and totally worth a watch. Just try not to think about how much work there was...
A SHORT LOVE STORY IN STOP MOTION from Carlos Lascano on Vimeo.
This was a pretty cool concept but overall I found it kinda creepy. In my opinion, the music definitely carried it.
I'm in the process of moving house at the moment but WILL actually update some stuff on the film soon, so do keep posted.

Ani-mat-ions
Warning from Gordy Higgins on Vimeo.
One of my friends from uni animated this a while ago. Im not usually a big fan of motion graphics but I think that the little, hand animated characters really added something to it. I thought it was really fun and quirky.
Fox Retro from PUNGA on Vimeo.
Anybody who knows me well is probably aware of my unhealthy obsession with 8-bit stuff, and this short is exactly why. It's fun and adventurous and kinda nostalgic. I loved the colours and character designs, especially the way they moved about the screen. Just awesome...
SIMPLE by Stanislav Sekela(3D animation) from Standa Sekela on Vimeo.
I saw this little animation just the other day on recommendation from a friend. Totally worth it. This seems to be a weird hybrid of 3d and stop-motion animation and the weird characters had me both hooked and slightly creeped out. Definitely worth a watch.
Relentless Drag from Trof Dugweed on Vimeo.
One of the graduate films from last year and honestly one of my all time favourites. Such a weird, yet simple idea. I love almosteverything about this film: the concept, the characters, the animation. It all works amazingly. Damn good work.
More updates on my film soon and I'll also post a link to the actual film blog, once we update it a bit, as well as some stills and backgrounds. So stay tuned.

Angry Burds
I went down to the shops to buy some diet coke and there was a girl ahead of me in the line wearing an Angry Birds hoodie, an Angry Birds beanie, Angry Bird shoes, and was playing on her iPhone.

Injury
Banged my hand, my drawing hand, in the car door last night. My first reaction was:
"OH MY GOD! MY HAND IS BROKEN! MY ENTIRE LIVELIHOOD IS GONE! WHAT THE HECK WILL I DO"
(i removed any profanities).
I love stressing for no reason

WDC #5
Designed this for my fiance. She loves elephants and I don't really know why I haven't designed something for her before. Anyway, I wanted to have a pastel colour scheme and I think this turned out nicely. Might do some more work in this kind of style.
OMGSOBUSY!!!!
Hey there internets,
I've been so busy lately that I didn't even have time to facebook...
Recently, the main project I've been working on at work was fast approaching a critical deadline and I was still awaiting content from the client. With only a week to spare and over 4 minutes of motion graphics and "flash" animation to do, stress set in. After a few long days and nauseating hand pain (my index finger does not like left clicking), the project was finished, and the client loved it too. We managed to finish it off a day before the deadline, so the client could give us some small suggested changes, like correcting the spelling error that they provided in their head of departments name.
Feels great to have completed my first, big, solo project though. WOOT!!
In other news, work on my short film has been progressing at an alarming rate. We've finally finalised a fine schedule and finessed it to a fabulous degree. However, we've still got a ways to go and the schedule does not leave much room to move if we are to get it done in time. There be no time to waste me hearties (oh, by the way, there's a pirate ship in the film. Hence the speak).
In further, other news, I've recently been asked to design a business card with the works of Jon Contino (love that guy) in mind. I saw the project through freelancer and lunged at the opportunity. It should be interesting to see where it goes as I've never seen a business card in that kind of style. Anyhoo, you should check out Jon's work as it is awesome.
BUT I DIGRESS! The main point of this small, but concise (lol, as if) babble is to inform you that I was TOO BUSY and that I forgot about the weekly drawing challenge. UGH MER GERD!! Not that I don't have stuff to upload, I just forgot about internet-ising them...which was silly.
So keep yer eyes peeled, ye rapscallions, as I shall be uploading like a mad squid, I will, and ye eyes will be the happier fer it.
I will be catchin' ye later ye sea dawgs.
AVAST!!!

'Stick' like Leadership
Stick Figure Animated Page from Connor Johnston on Vimeo.
This short snippet was supposed to go into a project I was working on. Unfortunately, this bit was cut as the last second. The animation was going to be situated in a notebook, sitting next to a whiteboard and was supposed to be a "comical" representation of leadership.
An Oldie...
Finished this one in 2011. However, It's still one of my favourite artworks and I thought I'd add it to add some variety. I loved the simplicity of it, including the main character's design. Also love the whole "thick outline" thing. Might have to do something similar again someday...
Inkwerx
Ink ARt Experiment #4 from Desmond Leung 樂森 on Vimeo.
Well I know that Ink work is'nt anything new, but I really love this. It doesn't really classify as animation, but it's still a great source of inspiration for natural imagery and colour movement. Made me nice and happy too. Ink is awesome

Anyway, this one has a little camera movement and some breakdowns. Kinda liking this piece so far.

WDC # 3 - FILM SNIPPET

This small snippet of animation is this weeks WDC. It's rough animation for the wave in my film. I'll be uploading more as this shot progresses so the process can be clearly seen.

The Backwater Gospel
As long as anyone can remember, the coming of The Undertaker has meant the coming of death. Until one day the grim promise fails and tension builds as the God fearing townsfolk of Backwater wait for someone to die.
That's what it says on Youtube anyway. I loved the grungy and maddening atmosphere that this film captured. Also, the character design was so...wierd. I LOVE IT!!!
Drawing with Mac 'n' Cheese
Looking forward to doing some proper drawing tonight. It's been too long since I've uses traditional media to sketch. Probably going to do some work on next weeks WDC and hopefully I'll have something to show for it either tonight or tomorrow.
Also, just stumbled upon this great 3d student film. Very much reminds me of Team fortress 2, especially the big guy. I seem to have a real soft spot for "painterly" textures in 3D. I wonder if it has anything to with them looking like puppets. Loving some of the action effects. They're very "2D".

Absolutely love the character design, especially the painted textures, but got completely lost in all the symbolism.
Balancing Blocks
Balancing Blocks from Part & Parcel on Vimeo.
Brilliant little stop-motion film.
I watched this about 4 or 5 times and couldn't get over how much work must have gone into making this short. That's animation for you though.

Afternoon Internet
Welcome one and all to my blog.
This will be my base of operations for the foreseeable future and will play host to artwork, sample animation as well as links to other artists. Here you will find
I currently plan to undergo a weekly drawing challenge (WDC) that will, hopefully, evolve into a daily drawing challenge as time goes on. This basically means that I will posting artwork here a minimum of once a week. The artwork may be anything from a doodle, to a full blown ANIMATED FEATURE FILM (although I doubt it). So check back from time to time to see if I've posted anything.
I will also be posting updates from my current work, such as snippets from my short film, illustrations or animation I may be doing , or bits and bobs from my personal projects.
Current personal projects
I am currently working on a short animation titled "Darwin's Theory of Animation". It's basically a whole bunch of metamorphoses to keep me animating. However, if some film buff asks you what the short is, say that is is "a comical political commentary referencing many different art mediums and combining them in a simplistic and understandable format".
Thankyou for visiting and I hope the stay is enjoyable.
regards,
~ Connor
